What Are Acid Dyes

Acid dyes are water-soluble anionic dyes which are mainly used in the dyeing and printing of fibers such as wool, silk, nylon and modified acrylic fibers. Acid dyes have low attachment to cellulose fibers. Acid dyes can also be used in the coloring of leather, paper, inks, cosmetics, feather, wood, fur, soaps, food and so on. In order to set the color, an acid like sulfuric acid, acetic and vinegar is used during the dyeing process. Acid dyes have the characteristics of complete chromatography and bright shade.

By dyeing performance

There are three types:

  • Strong acid dyes
  • Weak acid dyes
  • Neutral acid dyes.

By chemical structures

The commonly used acid dyes could fall into azo dyes, anthraquinone dyes, triarylmethane dyes, xanthene dyes and so on.

The difference among strong acid dyes, weak acid dyes and neutral dyes

Strong acid dyes have simple molecular structures with a high proportion of sulfonic acid groups. The fibers are bound by ionic bonds. They exist in the form of anions in the dye bath. Why are they called strong acid dyes? Since the fibers should be dyed in a strong acidic dye bath. This kind of dyes have good levelling performance and bright shade, hence they are also called levelling acid dyes.

Weak acid dyes have more complicated molecular structures with a lower proportion of sulfonic groups. The fibers are dyed in a weak acidic dye bath. Normally the wet fastness of weak acid dyes is higher than that of strong acid dyes, but the levelling performance is not good as that of strong acid dyes.

Neutral dyes have smaller proportion of sulfonic acid groups in the molecular structures and the fibers are dyed in neutral baths.

The characteristics of acid dyes

Water solubility: Most of acid dyes dissolve quickly in water. Acid dyes contain negatively charged groups such as sulphonic groups which make them water soluble.

Fiber affinity: Acid dyes are suitable for protein fibers like wool and silk and synthesized polyamide fibers. But acid dyes have low attachment to cellulose fibers.

Full range of spectrum: Acid dyes have the largest variety of colors, especially a lot of bright colors.

Good fastness: A lot of acid dyes have good light fastness and wet fastness, especially metal complex acid dyes.

Compatibility: The dyeing of acid dyes can be carried out by different dyeing methods such as immersion dyeing and exhaustion dyeing.

FAQ

Q: What types of fibers can be dyed with acid dyes?

A: Acid dyes are mainly used for dyeing protein fibers (wool and silk) and polyamide fibers.

Q: How do acid dyes work?

A: Most acid dyes are in the form of aromatic sodium sulfonates which are ionized and bound with amino or amide groups in fibers to set the colors.

Q: Are acid dyes environmentally friendly?

A: The dyeing wastes or wasted water should be treated according to the local regulations. Hence if the acid dyes and their dyeing wastes are handled or treated correctly and carefully, they are not bad to the environment.

Q: What is the difference between acid and reactive dye??

A: Both acid dyes and reactive dyes are water soluble dyes and they can be used in the dyeing and printing of silk and wool. Reactive dyes are also suitable for the dyeing of cotton and linen, but acid dyes are not suitable.
